This week’s blog is devoted to The Collective Voice – a podcast my dear friend Joy Schwartz (www.joyschwartz.com) and I launched this year.  Here is a bit of background about how it came to fruition and an invitation for you to check it out through my website or on iTunes.

My friend Joy and I go back to our days at OSU (even before – which you’ll learn about in Episode 1). Since then, we’ve been a constant presence in each other’s lives. There have been periods of time when we are on the phone a couple of times a week, and other times when we’ve gone months without being in contact. Last year, when we were having one of our signature post-kids-bedtime phone calls, we came up with the idea to launch a podcast.

Our conversations nearly always revolve around a few key topics 1) what it’s like working in corporate America 2) how we balance the craziness of a career and kids and  3) how we would rule the world one MBA or organizational behavior concept at a time.

We decided to bring these ideas to life through The Collective Voice. Here are some of the technical details:

  • We both have MacBooks, which come with Garage Band, the application we use to record and edit our podcast.
  • We recorded our first episode together at Nucleus CoShare in Dayton, OH while Joy was home over the holidays.
  • In addition to our 1:1 episodes, we have conducted a few interviews with colleagues and mentors.
  • Once we have the episode created, we do necessary sound editing, add introduction / exit elements and save it as an MP3 file.
  • We then load the episodes onto Podbean, which posts the episodes directly onto iTunes.

It has been fun and rewarding to not only figure out all of the technical details, but also to have our episodes downloaded over 200 times, with minimal publicity beyond our respective social media circles and websites.

I started listening to podcasts during my commute last November. I got tired of morning radio, channel surfing, and hearing the same music over and over. Now, I have a regular rotation of podcasts that I listen to, and am always trying out new ones. If you are a regular podcast listener, please add The Collective Voice to your subscriptions.  If you haven’t dived into the world of podcasts yet, why not let this be your first?

Be sure to check out what Joy has to say about the podcast on her blog.  Let us know what questions you have about podcasting!
